Pillowtop Vs. Firm Mattress

When choosing a mattress, it's important to take several factors into consideration. Different people have preferences when it comes to the comfort, support and firmness of the mattress. When comparing pillowtop and firm mattresses, you look to the makeup and feel of each to determine which work best for you.
  1. Firmness

    • For firm levels, there are three types to consider: firm, ultra firm and super firm. Each level rises a bit in firmness, with super firm being the most firm. Unlike a pillowtop, there is no extra level of cushion on the top of a mattress in the firm category. Any mattress in the firm category will give a high level of support while sleeping.

    Softness

    • For pillowtop mattresses, there are also levels: soft and ultra plush. The soft mattress is the cushiest, with a thicker pillowtop on top of the mattress than the ultra plush. These softer mattresses offer less support than firm mattresses, but are ideal for those who don't need the support and like a soft surface.

    Pillowtop Makeup

    • The pillowtop mattress, unlike a firm mattress, has two components. The bottom of the mattress is the foundation mattress, made very much like any other mattress. At the top, however, is a pillowtop, which accounts for the soft, plush feeling you get when lying on a mattress of this sort.

    Bedding

    • It's important to consider bedding for different mattresses. A firm, traditional mattress typically fit most fitted sheets from a bedding store. A pillowtop, however, sometimes require specially designed bedding. The extra height from the pillowtop can sometimes require an extra deep sheet.
