• How long a mattress lasts depends in large part on what type of mattress you purchase. A traditional mattress contains an inner core of metal springs or coils. The core is surrounded by layers of padding made out of fabric like wool, linen or cotton. Latex mattresses are formed with a vulcanized latex core, which is shot through with bubbles that add softness to the latex. A cotton covering surrounds the core.

Longevity

• Some mattress sellers recommend replacing your mattress every eight years. If you buy a quality, traditional mattress and care for it, it can last you a minimum of 10 years and continue to be comfortable for a few years longer. A worn-out traditional mattress loses firmness, sagging in the center or in the area where you usually sleep. Its coils can develop an unpleasant squealing sound every time you shift your weight. Latex mattresses last for about 20 years. As they age, they become hard and brittle.

Techniques

• No matter what type of mattress you choose, help it last longer by rotating and flipping it. Over time, your weight, which is placed in the same spot night after night, compresses and breaks down the material that makes up the mattress. For the first year you own one, rotate it every month and flip it every six months. After the first year, rotate the mattress every three or four months and continue to flip it twice a year. This distributes wear across the mattress and helps it last.

Considerations

• Other precautions can protect your mattress from damaging factors other than wear. A waterproof mattress pad prevents liquid from ruining it and prevents staining, which can void your warranty. A mattress that gets very wet is at risk for developing mold growth within its interior. Also, a tightly woven mattress pad can prevent infestation by bed bugs or dust mites and help to keep your mattress clean.
