Memory foam mattresses are generally the most durable, providing the best comfort for the longest time. After about 10 years the comfort level begins to decrease, while others such as innerspring mattresses begin to show signs of wear after only three years. Latex mattresses are also very durable, though they begin to wear slightly sooner than memory foam. Adjustable air beds, water beds and futons fall in the middle of the durability range. Each type and brand of mattress has a range of durability levels.
Each type of mattress is constructed in a different way. But no matter which type you choose, look for one that has features such as hand-tufting and hand-stitching. These higher quality methods will increase the durability of the mattress. Many mattresses today are made with the padding and soft sleeping surface on one side. While this does limit you from flipping the mattress, all of the comfort layers are focused on one side. This provides one higher quality sleep surface rather than two mediocre surfaces. In the case of a pillow-top innerspring mattress though, the extra layers of padding and upholstery tend to break down more quickly and the bed will develop body impressions sooner than other beds.
The quality of materials used in a mattress directly correlates to its durability. Many innerspring mattress manufacturers are replacing polyester fiber padding with memory foam or latex which have longer lifespans. More durable memory foam and latex beds are made using denser foam which takes longer to break down. Adjustable air mattresses have mechanical parts and water beds can develop leaks so select one that is made with high quality components and a low occurrence of these problems.
The way you use and care for your mattress plays a large role in how durable your mattress will be. One of the biggest reasons an innerspring mattress wears out is edge break-down. This typically occurs when someone sits on the edge of their bed repeatedly. While some newer mattresses are able to better withstand this, doing so will eventually cause any innerspring or adjustable air mattress to sag unevenly. Additionally, flip and rotate the mattress quarterly to evenly distribute wear across the mattress.
Using a proper and supportive foundation for your mattress will play a large part in the durability of the mattress. An old, worn out foundation will put pressure on parts of the mattress incorrectly, causing the mattress to sag prematurely. For this reason, purchase a new coordinating foundation each time you buy a new mattress. Additionally, the warranty is often voided if you use an old foundation or do not use one at all.
