How to Tie Down a Mattress Rack

Transporting mattresses can be easy if you have a large moving truck or van. But smaller vehicles such as cars and SUVs can make moving a mattress more difficult unless you have a roof rack. With a roof rack you can secure a mattress and box spring to the car, but it is important to tie it down properly to keep it in place.

Things You'll Need

  • Large tarp
  • 2 or 3 ratchet tie-down straps

Instructions

    • 1

Lay the large tarp on top of your vehicle roof rack. An even amount of tarp should hang off the rack on all sides.

    • 2

Place the box spring (if you have one) centered on top of the roof rack. Place the mattress on top of the box spring.

    • 3

Grasp the sides of the tarp and bring them up on top of the mattress. When complete, the box spring and mattress should be wrapped up in the tarp.

    • 4

Take one of the ratcheting tie-down straps and wrap it around the top and long sides of the wrapped-up mattress and box spring toward the back of them.. Run the bottom of the strap under the roof rack and slide the loose end of the strap through the adjustable ratchet.

    • 5

Connect the strap end hook to the strap clip. Pull the loose end tight and push the adjustable ratchet clamp closed.

    • 6

Repeat Steps 4 and 5 for the second strap. Position this strap toward the front of the box spring and mattress. Place a third strap in the middle for extra security.

    • 7

Lift and pull on the mattress to ensure it is tightly in place before driving.
