How to Keep Towels Fresh When Kept in a Cabinet

Keeping towels fresh in a closet or pantry helps cut down on the frequency of washes. It's annoying when you grab a towel from your linen area and it smells musty or stale. This smell doesn't make you feel fresh after you rub it all over yourself after a shower. Knowing how to keep your towels fresh in a pantry or closet doesn't require a lot of time and adds just a couple of extra steps to your household cleaning regimen.

Things You'll Need

  • 20-ounce spray bottle
  • 15 ounces distilled water
  • 1 ounce white vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons baking soda
  • 3 ounces lemongrass essential oil
  • Sachet/dryer sheets

Air out your home once a week, including your closets and pantries. Opening these closed-in areas keeps fresh air circulating, even if it's only rarely. This prevents the air from smelling stale.

Mix the distilled water, baking soda, vinegar and lemongrass essential oil in the 20-ounce plastic spray bottle. Add the water first so the baking soda and vinegar don't react. With that much water diluting the ingredients, you won't experience a fizzing action. This concoction is gentle and natural, and you can obtain the materials in grocery and discount stores.

Place a sachet in your linen closet. Sachets are ordinarily put in luggage or drawers to keep the musty smells away, but they serve the same purpose in linen closets. You can also throw a few scented dryer sheets in your closet to keep your towels smelling fresh.
