How to Destain a Mattress

Removing mattress stains is an inevitable yet manageable household chore that requires mild cleaning products to preserve the condition of the mattress while effectively lifting the stain. Perspiration, urine and body oils easily stain the mattress and cause germs that shorten the life span of the mattress if left uncleaned. A mild cleaning product is necessary to remove stains without oversaturating the mattress, as moisture exposure increases the risk of mildew production.

Instructions

    • 1

Soak up as much of the stain as possible with a clean terry cloth.

    • 2

Pour one-half cup of hydrogen peroxide into a spray bottle and spray the peroxide directly onto the stain. Allow the hydrogen peroxide to set into the stain for at least eight minutes.

    • 3

Tamp a terry cloth against the cleaned area to absorb the cleaning solution, and cover the wet spot with baking soda. The baking soda neutralizes odors that linger after removing the stain.

    • 4

Leave the baking soda on the stain overnight, and wipe the baking soda off of the mattress with a damp terry cloth.
