How to Get a Big Mattress Into a Small Space

Moving mattresses can be difficult and awkward due to their large size. Trying to put a large mattress into a small space, such as a small bedroom or storage closet, can be a challenge but is possible. Ideally a mattress is chosen for a space after determining proper size and fit before purchasing the mattress.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the dimensions of the small space. The space must be at least as big as the mattress in order to fit. This may vary if you are storing the mattress standing upright instead of lying flat.

    • 2

Compare the measurements of the room to the measurements of the mattress. According to Dormia Mattresses, the smallest mattress, twin, is 39 inches wide and 75 inches long. The largest mattresses are California king at 72 inches wide and 80 inches long. If the mattress size is smaller than the room there is a way to get the mattress in.

    • 3

Lift up the mattress with one person at each end of the mattress. Stand it up on its side and begin to move it through the space's entryway.

    • 4

Adjust the angle of the mattress, raising the front or back, or tilting as needed to get it through the doorway.

    • 5

Gently and slightly bend the mattress and allow it to bend a little around tight corners or turns in the space. The mattress materials are usually somewhat flexible, though the box spring that often go beneath are not.
