The Size of a Trailer Mattress

Travel trailers offer compact living quarters with all the comforts of home. Trailers typically range in length from 12 to 35 feet, including a kitchen, dining area, bathroom and sleeping areas. Most trailers are equipped with an innerspring mattress on top of a wood platform. The size and quality of mattresses vary depending on the type of trailer and the caliber of its amenities.
  1. RV Mattresses

    • To maximize space, many trailer manufacturers use specially sized mattresses that are made to fit into RVs. Bunks may be equipped with a truck mattress, which may measure from 32 to 36 inches wide and up to 80 inches long. RV twin mattresses measure 34 inches wide. Full-size mattresses measure 49 inches wide, and queen mattresses measure 60 inches wide. All three sizes are 74 inches long. King beds are rarely found in travel trailers.

    Standard Mattresses

    • Trailers may come equipped with standard-size mattresses. Twin mattresses measure 38 inches wide by 74 inches long. Full mattresses measure 54 inches wide by 74 inches long. Queen mattresses have a width of 60 inches and a length of 79 inches. King mattresses measure 76 inches wide by 80 inches long.

    Replacement Ideas

    • Options to replace or upgrade the trailer’s mattress include standard mattresses, RV mattresses, custom-made mattresses, memory foam mattresses and air mattresses. Standard mattresses may be too heavy and inflexible for some situations. For example, some trailers have storage in a compartment under a bed; often these compartments are accessed by lifting the end of the bed. In this instance, a lighter-weight, flexible mattress such as a memory foam mattress may offer optimal flexibility. Sofa beds and fold-out loveseat beds can be replaced an air mattress with a battery powered or electric-powered pump.

    Sheet Considerations

    • Knowing your trailer’s mattress size is critical for buying properly sized sheets. It is not always necessary to buy specially made RV sheets, which are generally more expensive than standard sheets. Measure the mattress’s length, width and depth to determine if standard-size sheets will fit. Convertible beds and narrow bunks may require special sizes that can be purchased online or in RV supply stores.
