Moving a Mattress Alone

Moving day is not an easy day to tackle alone. Moving large items like mattresses are nearly impossible for some people. Most people can move twin and full size mattresses by themselves. But queen, king and California-king size mattresses are more difficult to maneuver alone. Larger mattresses are heavier and can fold onto themselves when they are not lying flat. When attacking this task alone, you can move a mattress with no help using a common tool and elbow grease.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove all bedding from atop the mattress and set it aside.

    • 2

Wrap the mattress in a protective mattress bag or an old fitted sheet.

    • 3

Tie a 15 ft. rope around the mattress, as you would tie a bow around a gift. Center the rope underneath the mattress from its foot to head. Bring both ends of the rope to the center on the front-side of the mattress, and criss-cross these ends. Drag each end to the left and right sides of the mattress and wrap them underneath. Tie both ends into a knot underneath the mattress in the center.

    • 4

Lift either the left or right side of the mattress straight up, and slide the mattress off the box spring.

    • 5

Grab the footend of the mattress and push it upright, so the mattress is now on its side.

    • 6

Slide the mattress by pulling it by its footend or head with both hands across the room or out of the door. If the mattress is too heavy to slide by the end, move to the center of the mattress and pull it by the rope. Moving the mattress in the center will give you more leverage and keep the mattress from falling over.

Position the mattress near the hallway and room walls, so the wall will act as a support for the mattress. If the mattress begins to bend over, it will bend into the wall.
