How to Repair Cat Scratches on Leather Sofa

Most pet owners have had a curious, newly born kitten or restless cat pick at the sofa in search of a fly or other small prey, and leave a mark or scratch in its wake. Well, don't fret, the scratches can easily be "removed," or in most cases, covered up with a leather repair product or felt pen. The technology may not seem advanced, but it works.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the level of damage and purchase necessary supplies. For optimum results, choose a leather repair product; however you may also use Old English Furniture Polish, shoe polish or a felt tip pen. Because you will essentially be filling in the scratches, it is important to match the product to the sofa. Do not apply unless the product matches the sofa, and in this case, opt for the Old English Furniture Polish and apply specifically to the damaged area.

    • 2

Apply the Old English Furniture Polish using a cloth. Be specific in your application, only applying the polish to the inside of the scratch. Avoid simply pouring the polish over the area, allow the polish to fill in the scratch as it is wiped clean. Instead, treat the scratch itself and then allow the polish to dry.

Follow with a felt tip pen. Use a felt tip pen to fill in the scratch. If you cannot naturally blend the polish to cover the scratch, use a felt tip pen to eliminate any creasing or indentation made from the split or scratched area. The felt tip pen will allow more control and precision. Use as a last step and after the polish has fully dried.

Match and use other materials. Shoe polish is another material that can, and should be, used. As with all products, especially polishes, always refer to the manufacturer's instructions and allow the product to dry before applying a second application. Use the shoe polish as you did with the leather repair. Individual instructions may apply, but in most cases, apply specifically to the scratch, not the entire area, and then allow to dry.

Explore other options. Try powdered products that are poured over the scratch, swept into the indentation and then sealed with polish or other agent. Always refer to the manufacturer's instructions and follow as directed.
