Making Chair Slipcovers Fit

Remember when the only way to make a chair slipcover fit was to force the fabric down behind the cushions, tie straps to keep it in place and then--after anybody sat down--do it all over again? No more. Now you can fit almost any kind of chair with a stretch slipcover. In the process, you can change colors and make the look more casual or formal. And you no longer have to worry about spills and dirt as slipcovers have fabric protection.

Instructions

  1. Making Your Chair Slipcover Fit

    • 1

Measure the chair. Note whether the separate cushion is a T-shape or box shape.

    • 2

Buy a two-piece slipcover with a separate cushion cover. Take fabric swatches with you when you shop to match or coordinate them with your decor colors.

    • 3

      Remove the cushion.

    • 4

Place the stretch-knit slipcover over the chair, using the removable positioning stickers to help center the cover and place it in the correct position over the arms.

    • 5

Pull the cover down and tuck it under the base of the chair on all four sides.

    • 6

Adjust the arm width of the cover by stretching it to match the shape of the arms of your chair. You can use the decorative stitch on the outside of the arm part of the cover to align it to the contour of your chair arms.

    • 7

Take hold of the elastic bottom band on the base of the slipcover. Pull and adjust it, smoothing the fabric evenly around the base of the chair. This secures the fabric under the chair.

    • 8

Cover your chair cushion with the separate cushion cover. If you have a T-shaped cushion, first slide one end of the cover over one of the T extensions. Stretch the fabric until you can fit the cover over the other T extension. If there is decorative outer stitching on the cushion cover, make sure it is centered on your cushion. Pull the cover up and close it over the cushion.

Smooth the fabric on the base of the chair and place the cushion on the seat.
