How to Choose Living Room Furniture Sets

Living room furniture sets can be a big purchase. You may only be able to get a new set every couple of decades. Living room furniture sets are an easy way to date any room. On a lot of decorating shows, these are the first things to get updated when a couple wants to sell their house. Sure, people are buying the house, not the furniture. However, the furniture can lend a fresh, modern air to the room that shows people that the homeowner's update regularly & take pride in their home. New sofas & loveseats don't have to be expensive. Here is how to choose the right one for you.

Think about how you really live. Decide whether you want a formal living room or more of a family room feel. If you choose expensive fabrics, it's more likely that your kids will just get to stand outside the living room & say "Ohh, that looks nice." If you have another family room, you can get away with this. If your living room is your main living space it needs to work both for your family & for any company that you might have.

Shop when you have lots of energy. If you go & sit on a bunch of sofas all day long, they might all seem comfortable. This is because it's been a long day & sitting on anything feels good. Since you'll have your living room furniture set for years to come, double check. Go back to the store on several days & sit on the couch again to make sure that it is still the right fit.

You'll find a lot of sofas with double cushions. These provide extra comfort. Down filled sofas are more expensive, but if you love the way they feel, it might be worth the investment in the long run.

Look at the shape. While rolled arms have gone out in popularity over the last few years, they are the most comfortable to lay your head on when watching TV. A modern arm that is straight up & done might be uncomfortable for the same reason. Think about how you will be sitting in your room the most. If you don't like the look of a reclining sofa, put ottomans close at hand so people can put their feet up.

Choose something that will last. Ten years ago you could've bought a green & white checked sofa that wasn't that comfortable but was the trend. That sofa would've become dated in about three years. At the same time you also could've bought a light tan chenille or khaki couch that would still be in style today.

Bring the pops of color into your room through accessories. If you want pattern in your room, buy a rug or change out your art work. These are inexpensive fixes. If you have a neutral sofa your room can go in almost any direction without have to buy new a new living room furniture set.

Consider fabric. Microsuede is a very popular fabric for living room furniture sets. It's usually stain resistant so it works well with kids or pets. However, this fabric also shows hand prints when people run their hand over the fabric. This may bother you, it might not. Look for a textured microfiber that is still comfortable & easy to clean but won't show as many marks.

Break up the set. You might find living room furniture sets that come complete with rugs, end tables & lamps. Don't let one piece from the collection throw you off from a good bargain. Just make sure that you love the basic furniture. You can always buy new lamps, or you don't even need a matching pair of lamps.
