Find your focal point. Is there a large window, fireplace or flat-screen TV in the room? Face your couch in that direction. This will anchor your space because there's some logic to the arrangement. If there's room, put a sofa table behind your couch.
Put your TV cabinet at an angle in the corner of the room if your TV can be moved away from cable connections. Face the couch to the cabinet. If you have a sectional sofa, angle the corner of the sectional so that it faces the center of the TV.
Arrange chairs on either side of the couch, and place a coffee table in front of the couch for magazines and collectibles. Be sure that the couches, chairs, end tables and coffee tables are several feet away from the wall.
Create an intimate reading and conversation space in your study. Pull couches or chairs away from the walls, and arrange them so they're facing each other. Place a coffee table between them, where your magazines and books will be stacked.
Place your bookcases against the wall to the left or right of the couch and chairs in the study. On the opposite wall there might be a fireplace, a window or TV, but these will not be the focal points.
In your bedroom, place the bed at an angle in the corner of the room, instead of up against a wall. This creates relief from the traditional order of bedroom furniture arrangement and energizes a square space.
