How to Remove Cigarette Smoke From Suede

Cigarette smoke permeates porous surfaces, including cloth fabric and suede. This smoke odor can linger, even after the source is long gone. While cloth fabrics can be machine washed to get rid of odor, a suede item--whether it is a sofa or a jacket--must be cleaned with a minimal amount of water. Your local dry cleaner can get the odor out of a jacket, but having a suede item professionally cleaned isn't always necessary--you can treat odors on suede items at home.

Instructions

    • 1

Brush the suede with a suede brush. This cleans extra debris from the jacket, sofa or other suede product and raises the knap so cleaner can work more deeply.

    • 2

Apply a suede cleaner. These cleaners do not generally need to be diluted, and most come with an applicator. If the kind you are using did not come with an applicator, apply it with a soft cloth or brush.

    • 3

Work the suede cleaner into the entire item. Even if you miss a small area, the smoke smell may linger.

    • 4

Allow the cleaner to dry completely. Brush the suede again.
