How to Build a TV Armoire Entertainment Center

An armoire is a piece of furniture primarily used for storage. One function of an armoire is as an entertainment center. More than a TV stand, it is the central location of all the entertainment hardware in a house. The components used will influence the construction of the entertainment center in that each needs breathing space. Two inches on the left, the right and behind them is recommended.

Instructions

  1. Face Frame

    • 1

Place all the face frame pieces on a worktable. Set the two 84-inch (frame side) pieces side by side. Measure from one end and make marks at 4, 13, 15, 28, 30, 64 and 66 inches. Place the framing square on the marks and draw a line across the width of the side pieces.

    • 2

Place the 4-inch piece at one end (the bottom) and between the frame sides and the 3-inch piece at the other end (the top) between the frame sides. Secure them with the corrugated fasteners. Next, place the 2-inch pieces on the other marks and secure them with the corrugated fasteners.

    • 3

Measure and cut the veneer edge band with the utility knife to fit the edges of the frame. The edge band goes on the outside edge of the frame as well as the inside edge. Cut the longest pieces first and install them before measuring for the others. Heat the veneer edge band with the iron while holding it in place. This will activate the adhesive on the back of the veneer and secure it to the frame. Sand the edges that hang over the frame with 100-grit sandpaper.

    Cabinet

    • 4

Place the 24-by-84-by-¾-inch plywood (end panels) on a worktable. Measure from one end and make marks at 4, 15, 30 and 66 inches. Place the framing square on the marks and draw a line across the width of both end panels. Put an "X" on the same side of the line as the end from which the measurements were taken.

    • 5

Apply glue between the 4-inch line and the end of the end panel. Place the 4-by-24-by-¾-inch plywood (cleats) on the glue and secure it to the end panel with the 2d box nails. Repeat this for the other end panel.

    • 6

Apply glue to the 1½-inch side of the 1-by-2-by-24-inch lumber (cleats). Place one on each "X" aligning it with the lines drawn in Step 1. Secure these with the 2d box nails. Next, place the five pieces of 24-by-36-by-¾-inch plywood (shelves) on the worktable. Mark the center of the width of one of the shelves. Place the framing square on the mark and draw a line across the 24-inch width of the shelf. Next, apply glue to the 24-inch edge of the remaining 4-by-24-by-¾-inch plywood and secure it to the shelf with the finish nails using the line as a guide.

    • 7

Apply glue to the tops of the cleats, place four of the shelves on them with the one from Step 4 on the bottom and secure them to the end panels with the 4d finish nails. Apply glue to the 24-inch edges of the remaining shelf and secure it at the top of the entertainment center with the finish nails. Next, apply glue to three sides of the four pieces 4-by-36-by-¾-inch plywood, place them between the end panels at the back and bottom of the shelves and secure them with the finish nails.

    • 8

Apply glue to all of the ¾-inch edges. Secure the 36-by-84-by-¼-inch plywood to the entertainment center with the 2d box nails. Turn the unit over. Apply glue to the ¾-inch edges and secure the face frame to it with the finish nails. Apply wood putty in the joints of the frame if needed and sand it with 100-grit sandpaper.
