How to Arrange Furniture in a Narrow Living Room

When you are arranging furniture in a narrow living room, good layout is crucial. Uneven placement will make the room look awkward and asymmetrical, making it uncomfortable to be around. Placing furniture along the short walls will decrease the floorspace, making everything feel crowded. Plan your design carefully to get the most comfortable, functional layout for your narrow room.

Instructions

    • 1

Place your largest piece of furniture in the middle of the longest wall, parallel to that wall. You may want to place your table or couch in the center of the room, or put it right against the wall to save space.

    • 2

Arrange other long, narrow items around the largest item so that they face in a parallel direction. For example, if you are fitting a couch and a couple shelves in the room, you could put the couch along one long wall in the middle and the shelves on the opposite wall off to either side of the couch.

    • 3

Arrange smaller items so that they balance each other out symmetrically. For example, if you have a coffee table dominating the center of the room, you might put one chair on either narrow end of the coffee table, angled towards it.

Install wall shelves or add tall, low-profile standing shelves to save floor space. You may also use tables with hidden cabinets to store books, games or any other supplies you want in your living room.
