Chaise Definition

A chaise, also referred to as a chaise longue or chaise lounge, supports your back like a chair but features an extended seating area that supports your legs as well. Reading, watching television or sewing are all practical uses for a chaise.
  1. Identification

    • Chaises feature a backrest along their short side and either a low arm or nothing down their long sides. If a piece has a backrest on both of its short sides, it is called a daybed.

    Function

    • Chaises offer a comfortable place for one person to recline along the length of the piece with their feet up. Chaises without arms can also function as a bench, where multiple people can sit perpendicular to the back of the piece.

    Types

    • Chaises are available for indoor and outdoor use. Outdoor chaises often come with adjustable back rests that allow the user to lay completely flat or to sit up in a comfortable reading position.

    Misconceptions

    • The French term for this piece of furniture is "chaise longue," literally translating to "long chair." English speakers mistakenly replaced the "longue" with the term "lounge," since this is the activity takes place on this piece of furniture.

    Tip

    • Chaises are often placed in front of fireplaces and bay windows since they do not block the view of the these architectural elements as a sofa would.
