How to Repair a Damaged Leather Sofa

Repairing damaged leather on a sofa is a good idea to prevent the damage from progressing any further. You can repair the leather on the sofa with a leather repair kit. If the sofa is still basically in good condition other than a hole, tear or burn, there is no need to replace it.   Prepare the surface of the damaged leather sofa. Use scissors to cut off any frayed or rough areas around the damage. Lightly press scissors flat on damaged area and snip damaged material off.

  Clean around the area to be repaired with a damp cloth. Rub in a circular motion to dislodge built up grime and dirt.

  Examine your leather sofa to determine if the damage is a hole, cut or burn. For cuts put a small amount of the glue supplied with the leather repair kit in the crack. Use enough glue to fill in the crack. Heat the area with a hair dryer, holding it at a 30-degree angle until the glue gets tacky, and press the leather together.

  Apply a light coat of filler that is included in the kit to holes and burns with the spatula enclosed in the kit. Let dry, or use the hair dryer to dry the repair. Repeat with several light coats of filler until the hole is level with the surrounding leather.

  Choose the color in the color guide that comes with the kit to find the color that is the closest match to your leather, and mix according to the color guide.

  Apply the colorant to the repaired area using the sponge included with the kit. Let the repair dry, and determine if a second application of the colorant is necessary. If so, repeat up to three coats. Allow to dry between coats.
