Styles of Sofas

There are many different styles of sofas to take into consideration when decorating your living room. Some styles will fit in better with certain decorating themes, while others are adaptable to a wider variety of themes. When choosing a sofa style, you will need to consider not only your decorating theme, but also the level of comfort and usage the sofa will need to provide.
  1. Settee

    • A settee is a French-inspired type that is best suited for a decor that features antique furnishings. The settee is generally smaller than other sofas and will provide comfortable seating for two people. The frame is usually wooden and exposed, and is often carved with unique designs. The seats are upholstered and attached to the sofa rather than having individual cushions.

    Sectional

    • A sectional sofa is a larger sofa that will separate into several smaller sections or combine to provide a curved seating area. Sectionals often include a built-in chaise lounge. The sectional type of sofa is ideal for a larger family, and will provide comfortable seating for television viewing for seven to eight people. It is best to use a sectional in a large room because it will make a small room look crowded.

    Bridgewater

    • A bridgewater sofa is also called an English sofa and is best used in a room that is decorated with casual elegance. This is one of the most comfortable sofa styles, with deep, soft cushions. The arms are low and set slightly back from the front of the sofa. Bridgewater sofas generally have no skirt to cover the area at the bottom and have slender, elegant legs.

    Lawson

    • The Lawson style of sofa is very popular for those seeking comfort above all else. Lawson sofas have lower backs than most sofas, and also have low arms that make comfortable headrests. This is a style that fits best with modern decor, but is adaptable to other themes. The sofa has a very square, geometrical shape, and will sit three to four people comfortably.

    Slipper

    • The slipper style of sofa is made more for looks than comfort. It is straight backed and has no arms, which makes it uncomfortable for lounging. It is generally shorter in length than most sofas and fits well in small or cramped spaces. Slipper sofas easily adapt to modern or contemporary decorating themes, since they come in a large variety of fabric styles.
