Leather Repair Instructions

Leather furniture is a great choice for you home. It is usually low maintenance and can easily be cleaned. Over time, leather can develop cracks or tears that should be repaired so that they do not spread. You can call an expensive leather repair man who will come out and clean and fix your leather furniture. You can also repair the furniture yourself at home. Purchase a leather-repair kit from most home supply stores to fix the repairs yourself.
  1. Clean the Leather

    • The first step to take in repairing your leather is to clean the area that is to be repaired. You will need to remove all dirt and grime before you begin. If the surface is rough because of the cracks or tears, use a 220-grit sandpaper. Wet the area slightly and use the sandpaper to gently rub the area smooth. This will make the repair smoother so that it is less noticeable. Let the leather dry completely and then apply a leather conditioner to the area.

    Leather Fill

    • Leather Fill is a soft putty-type material when it is first applied and, as it dries, it resembles leather. Match the correct color for your repair. Try the compound in an inconspicuous area before putting it on a high-profile area to make sure the color matches and to test the process. If you are happy with the results, spread the putty onto the crack or hole and smooth it out. Apply heat to the area for a few minutes. Heat can be applied by using an ordinary light bulb, an iron or a heating gun. This helps to set the bond. If you apply too little heat, the repair will be weak, and too much heat can melt the compound. To determine the correct amount of heat, apply the heat to your test area first.

    Repairing Large Holes

    • If your leather has large holes that are too big for a putty repair, use a leather patch that matches your furniture. You can find excess leather under the seat or in a nonshowing area. Cut the patch a little larger than the hole and place it in from the back. Use leather adhesive to hold the patch in place. After the adhesive has dried, apply the putty just as you would for a smaller hole or crack. This will seal the edges and make the patched place look more natural.

    Leather Clone

    • Leather clone is a spray adhesive that makes the putty or the patch look like normal leather grain. Spray a light coating of the product and allow it to dry. Spray a heavier coat so that it is sticky. Apply the cloning pad on top of the spray and hold for approximately 30 seconds. Remove the pad and blot the area with a paper towel. You can reapply the solution if you are not happy with the grain.
