How to Install Bun Feet on Furniture

Adding bun feet to chairs, sofas, chests and cabinets can update the look of your furniture. There are many styles to choose from beyond the classic bun. Select bun feet in a multitude of finishes or unfinished, ready for you to apply the appropriate color. It is an easy way to achieve a fresh and trendy look. You will need to remove skirts from sofas and chairs with skirting to allow the new feet to show. A perfect time to add the bun feet would be when you are reupholstering the piece.

Instructions

    • 1

Examine the furniture piece on which you wish to install the bun feet. If the piece has wooden corner braces, use hang bolts and nuts to install. If there are no corner braces, you can use dowel screws to attach the feet into the wood frame. (A dowel screw has threads at both ends and no head.)

    • 2

Remove the old feet, if there are any. If the old feet screwed into the frame, you can use the same screw holes to attach the new bun feet. Match the new screws to fit the old holes, using a slightly larger screw than the hole to ensure a tight fit.

    • 3

Position the bun foot where you desire it to be on the furniture. Mark the place. Drill a pilot hole slightly smaller than the screw into the furniture corner.

    • 4

Mark the center of the bun foot, and drill the hole if the bun feet you chose did not come with pre-drilled center holes. If using dowel screws, rotate one end of the screw into the bun foot, sinking it halfway. Next, place the end that protrudes into the pilot hole you drilled in Step 3. Rotate the bun foot until it fits snugly against the furniture.

    • 5

Install the bun feet on corner-braced furniture by removing the dust cover from the bottom of the upholstered piece first. This allows you to access the top of the brace. Screw hanger bolt into the bun foot, rotating it halfway into the wood. Slide the protruding end into the corner brace, and secure with a nut and washer.

Install the remaining feet in the same manner. Replace the dustcover using a staple gun or glue.
