How Do I Disinfect Upholstery?

Upholstery is fabric that has been stretched and secured over a piece of furniture such as a couch, sofa, love seat, lounge, recliner or chair. These fabrics can become infested with bacteria and harmful viruses, including the flu virus, mold and mildew. Disinfect these items at least once per month to prevent illness caused by bacteria and viruses. Disinfect daily if someone in your household is sick or if there is an illness going around at work, school or other places you visit frequently. Disinfecting is easy and takes up little time.

  Clear off pillows, stuffed animals, toys and blankets from upholstered surfaces that need disinfecting. Put them in a pile in the middle of the room.

  Spray down all cushions with a mist of disinfecting spray. The spray bottle or can should be held 5 to 10 inches away from the fabric, and you should squeeze the trigger gently and move up and down as you spray a smooth stream of disinfectant down the furniture.

  Spray the backs of sofas, couches, love seats, lounges and recliners. Give the entire upholstered surface a thorough misting of disinfecting spray.

  Spray down all pillows, blankets and toys that go on the upholstered furniture.

  Allow to air dry with a fan circulating the air in the room or by opening the windows.
