How to Match Sofas & Sectionals

Extra seating in a living room or family room is always a plus, but pairing sofas and sectionals together can lead to an interior design dilemma in terms of layout and matching styles. This is true whether the furniture is new, thrift finds or hand-me-down pieces. With a few decorating tricks your sofas and sectionals can be transformed into a cohesive set. Match sofas and sectionals by visually tying them together in the space.

Instructions

    • 1

Reupholster the pieces in the same fabric to create a cohesive set. For a cheaper alternative, cover the sofas and sectionals with complementary slipcovers. If you cannot find a company that sells full sectional covers, one meant for a sofa and one meant for a love seat usually can be combined.

    • 2

Use decorative pillows to tie different colors or patterns together if reupholstering or covering them are not an option. For example, if your sofa is a tan stripe and your sectional a solid blue, place tan-striped and solid-tan pillows on the sectional and blue-striped and solid-blue pillows on the sofa.

    • 3

Hang complementary window treatments to match sofas and sectionals in the same space. Put both patterns of fabric together, such as a solid tan roman shade underneath blue-striped drapes.

    • 4

Paint the walls in a tone that is found in both furniture pieces or alternate the colors in a decorative pattern on the wall. For example, blue stripes on the bottom half of the wall with a solid tan on the top half, or alternating blue and tan stripes under the chair rail would tie in the two different fabrics.

    • 5

Place the two pieces of furniture in an L-shaped layout, if possible, to mimic the flow of the sectional. For example, place the sectional in a corner and the sofa on the larger wall next to it, or set the sofa out into the room so that it seems to connect off the corner of the sectional.

    • 6

Place a large area rug in complementary colors in front of both pieces of furniture. Set two matching coffee tables in front of the pieces of furniture for functionality as well as visual appeal. Oval-shaped works best to continue the curved lines.

    • 7

Bring in other accessories that tie in the colors and patterns you used to match a sofa and a sectional in the same space. For example, a large abstract painting done in blues, matted in tan, and framed in the same wood as the coffee tables, hung behind the furniture can tie the entire seating area in together.
