How to Measure Furniture for Slipcovers

General furniture measurements for slipcovers include measuring the height, length, and width of furniture. Measuring furniture for slipcovers is relatively easy to do, once you know how to properly measure the furniture. Some people enjoy sewing their own slip covers with distinct fabric purchased from a craft or fabric supply store. Furniture slip covers are a viable alternative to having to purchase new furniture, and protect furniture from pet hair and food spills. Measurement guidelines below apply to both indoor and outdoor furniture. Write all measurements down as you go along.

Instructions

  1. Standard Chairs

    • 1

Take a tape measure and start from the bottom of the chair, at the back. Measure the height. Pull the tape measure from the ground up to the top of the chair. This is the height.

    • 2

Measure the width next. Walk around to the front of the chair. Place the tape measure on the left arm facing you, just on the outside, and stretch the tape measure across to the right arm facing you, on the outside of the arm. The part where the end of the cushion rests against the back part of the chair is called the back width.

    • 3

Measure the seat width next by measuring inside the arms. Measure the length of the chair next. Begin at the back of the chair and measure to the front, just past the arms.

    Wingback chairs

    • 4

Measure the wing width at the widest part on wingback chairs. The wing width is on wingback chairs, at the top.

    • 5

Measure the back width on wingback chairs, corner to corner. Measure the seat width on wingback chairs by measuring inside the arms.

    • 6

Measure the back height on wingback chairs from floor to the top, the same as on standard chairs.

    Dining chairs

    • 7

Measure dining chairs by starting with the back body length of the chair.

    • 8

Measure the skirt length, the seat width, and the seat depth.

    • 9

Make sure to clear the edge of the seat when measuring depth. The seat depth measures from the front of the seat to the back of the seat itself; the end that rests against the back part of the chair.

    Love seats and sofas

    • 10

Measure furniture from arm to arm on love seats and sofas. Place the tape measure on the outside of the arm, and measure across to the outside of other arm. Measure seat cushion depth from the back of the seat cushion to the front of the seat.

    • 11

Measure body width from the outside edge of the right arm, around the back of the love seat or sofa to the outside edge of the left arm.

    • 12

Measure contour length from the back of the love seat or sofa on the bottom, going over the top of the love seat or sofa and back down to the floor in the front.
