Recliner Chair Features

Reclining

• The one feature that all recliner chairs have in common is the ability to recline. Some chairs fold out completely flat while others may keep the sitter in a partially upright position for watching television or reading. Reclining is usually engaged when the sitter throws her weight back, causing the seat back to tilt back and the seat itself to slide forward.

Footrest

• Most recliners also feature a footrest. This may be a piece of the seat that extends when in the reclined position, or a separate footrest that the sitter can engage with a lever on the side of the chair. A spring mechanism in the chair makes it easier to return the footrest to its original position. With the chair in its reclined position and the footrest up, a recliner takes on a horizontal shape that may be best for sleeping.

Rocking and Gliding

• Some recliner chairs also have a rocking or gliding feature. Rocking recliner chairs pivot on one or more points within the base of the chair. While the seat and seat back rock, the base itself remains firmly planted on the floor. Gliding recliners slide forward and backward on a mechanism that suspends the seat from support arms. Gliders may be better in small spaces since there is less risk of the seat back coming into contact with a wall behind the chair.

Storage

• Recliner chairs might also feature storage compartments for added convenience. Pockets for magazines or remote controls are common. Other types of recliner storage include cup holders and even refrigerated compartments for keeping cold beverages within arm's reach.

Materials

• Recliner chairs also stand out for their use of certain materials. Besides the patterns and textures to match the rest of the living room, a recliner might feature premium materials like hardwood, leather or cotton. Other chairs may use more durable, easy to care for materials like synthetic cloth or faux leather, and plywood frames to reduce weight and cost.

Modular

• Some recliners easily disassemble for ease of transport. This usually involves removing a series of screws or bolts and lifting the seat back off of the chair, making the two pieces much easier to store and transport. Single-piece recliner chairs might not fit through narrow doors or hallways, making the modular designs essential for some rooms.
