Ottoman Styles

Ottomans rose to prominence in the 18th century in Europe as small boxes topped with pillows. The piece of furniture quickly rose in popularity, even finding fame as Little Miss Muffet's tuffet in the widely known Mother Goose nursery rhyme. Today, ottomans are built in a variety of styles to suit many home needs, from storage space to elegant pieces of accent furniture.
  1. Ottomans For Comfort

    • Ottomans in this style are designed with the intention of people using them for foot stools or small sitting areas. Bench-sized ottomans are a typical design, with covering fabrics ranging from cotton to tufted leather. Common shapes are rectangles for bench styles, squares, and round ottomans more suited for foot stools or even seats for children.

    Coffee Table Ottomans

    • Coffee table ottomans are designed as functional pieces of furniture, usually built in the lowered bench style. A solid wooden frame will typically have a hardened leather top upon which guests can comfortably sit drinks, books and other items without fear of them falling off and becoming damaged. The leather top in many cases is removable, allowing owners to use the recessed area underneath as a small storage area.

    Storage Ottomans

    • Storage ottomans pull double duty over other styles in that these pieces of furniture are often designed as seats or tables with a completely hollowed out center. Owners simply lift the top like the lid on the cookie jar to reveal what has been stored underneath. These are ideally suited for smaller apartments or studios where storage space may be limited.
