How to Repair Tears in Leather Furniture

Leather will eventually become worn out or torn in areas, especially if you have kids or have to move it. A leather repair kit contains all the tools you'll need to restore your leather furniture and keep rips from becoming bigger.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean around the torn area with a leather cleaner. You can also use a cotton ball dipped in rubbing alcohol. Ensure that no dirt or debris is present near the torn area.

    • 2

Rub patching compound on and around the tear. You'll only need to cover an area about 1/2 inch from the tear in all directions. Ensure that your compound application is smooth, and not lumpy.

    • 3

Apply the color-matching compound onto the patching compound. Apply thin coats until the repaired area matches the color of your leather. Apply one coat and let it dry for the required amount of time before applying a second coat.

    • 4

Apply the clear coat onto the color-matching compound once it dries in the same manner. Some kits may not have a clear coat, but this is recommended because it will add better protection to your repaired area.
