What Sizes Do Futons Come In?

A futon is traditional Japanese bedding that the Western market adapted for sofas and chairs. The futon is a flat mattress that covers a wooden or metal frame with dual purposes as living room furniture and a bed. A futon allows conversion to a sofa, lounge or bed position with economy of space. The flexible mattress can fold in the middle to act as a back rest in a seated position.
  1. Compact Chair Size

    • The chair or twin size futon comfortably seats one person in the upright position. When converted to a bed, the chair size can accommodate a small person or child. A matching ottoman can accompany the twin size. The chair can compliment a full size sofa.

    Loveseats

    • The twin loveseat acts as an oversize armchair with ample room for one adult. The frame measures approximately 45 to 49 in. wide. For small spaces, the twin loveseat can fit in a guest room or dorm room.

The full loveseat offers more elbow room than a twin loveseat and still remains compact for a family room. With a frame 60 to 64 inches wide, the full loveseat can seat and sleep two adults.

    Full Size

    • The full size or sofa futon usually offers the best option for living room furniture. Measuring approximately 81 to 85 inches wide, the full size seats three adults and sleeps two. The futon mattress converts more easily on the full size frame than the queen size frame, according to the Web Futon website.

    Queen Size Futon

    • The queen size, the largest format, provides an extra 5 inches of width over the full size frame. While adding slightly more elbow room for three adults, this size has the disadvantage of not converting as easily to the sofa position. The extended mattress can rise up over the supporting back.
