Repair of Microfiber Upholstery

Microfiber is made of extremely fine particles, densely piled together to create a durable, soft, stain-resistant material. Microfiber's low-maintenance characteristics make it a sought-after choice for upholstery, especially for families. The material comes in many finishes and colors. While durable, the fabric isn't indestructible and may rip or tear with heavy use. Those with a basic understanding of sewing techniques can repair most rips at home.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

  1. Preparation

    • 1

Apply a thin layer of anti-fray solution to the torn edges of the fabric.

    • 2

Wait one hour for the solution to dry completely.

    • 3

Cut a length of thread 36 inches long, or longer for large tears.

    • 4

Slip the thread through the eye of the needle and knot both ends together.

    • 5

Insert the needle into the underside of the fabric, bringing it up about 1/8 inch behind the tear in the undamaged portion of the fabric so the knot is buried.

    Repairing the Tear

    • 6

Bring the needle up from the bottom of the fabric at the edge of the tear.

    • 7

Insert the needle into the opposite side of the tear and bring it down, pulling it taut. A line of thread will run over the top of the tear.

    • 8

Repeat the process of bringing the needle up on one side and sending it back down on the other side of the tear, creating a closely knit weave until the entire ripped area is filled in and repaired.

    • 9

Make a small knot and trim it closely to finish the repair.
