DIY: Corner Entertainment Unit

An corner entertainment unit is a storage unit that is designed to fit into corners while holding all of the standard entertainment equipment, such as a television, DVD player, a Blu-Ray player and gaming consoles. A corner entertainment unit can also give you a clear view of the television, no matter where in the room you might be sitting. Homemade custom corner entertainment units can be designed to suit any room, space or decor, as they can be personalized to fit your particular needs.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the measuring tape along one of the walls in the corner where the unit will be built. Determine how wide the unit will be on both corner walls. Write both of these measurements down, if they differ.

    • 2

Place the measuring tape along the wall in a vertical fashion. Determine how tall the entertainment unit will be. This often depends on the players, consoles or other devices you want to have in your entertainment unit. Keep in mind that shelves can be added, so this measurement is the collective measurement of the unit. The television will be placed on top of the unit, so do not include its dimensions in the measurements. Add 1/2 inch to the length on one of the side pieces.

    • 3

Place the plywood down on a flat surface. Use the collected measurements in Step 1 along with the calculations you made in Step 2 to draw the pieces you need for the corner entertainment unit with a pencil. Draw the two side pieces for the unit, which should measure the overall height by the lengths determined on the walls in Step 1.

    • 4

Draw the top, bottom and shelves for the corner entertainment unit. All of the pieces should be identical in size and measurements and should form a triangle. Use the two wall measurements to create an L-shape with a protractor and connect the remaining ends as desired. This could be a straight line or a half-moon, depending on your preference. The number of shelves will depend on your personal needs.

    • 5

Cut all of the pieces out using the saw. Take one of the side pieces and cut a half moon out near the bottom. This is so the wires can be attached to the outlets. Sandpaper all of the surfaces and edges smooth to remove any potential splinters.

    • 6

Create a 90-degree angle with the two side pieces. The piece that measures 1/2-inch longer should cover the end of the other side piece. Attach the two using a hammer and nails.

    • 7

Attach the bottom piece of the corner unit by lining the bottom piece up to the side piece structure you just assembled. The bottom piece should slide in between the side pieces, so the nails will go through the side pieces to secure the bottom piece.

    • 8

Repeat Step 7 with the shelves and the top piece. All of the pieces should be attached with hammer and nails through the side pieces. Once the unit is assembled, paint or stain the cabinet. Once the finish is dry, place the DVD player and gaming consoles in the corner unit and pull the wires out through the half-moon hole. Place the television on top and enjoy your new corner entertainment unit.
