How Do I Hang a Day Bed?

On a porch, in a living room, or on a backyard patio, a hanging day bed is a warm invitation to sit, swing and relax. Unlike more common day beds with legs, a hanging day bed is more like a hammock or porch swing -- perfect for lazily swinging away summer afternoons. Hanging day beds consist of a simple wooden frame and mattress and can be decorated to your specific taste. With a few simple tools, you can hang a day bed in your own home.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure approximately 5 ½ inches from each corner of the day bed frame and mark for drilling. Drill 3/8-inch holes into each marker (eight holes total). Insert lag-eye bolts into each hole. A lag-eye bolt is a screw with a loop on one end.

    • 2

Drill four 3/8-inch holes into the ceiling joists (one for each corner of the day bed). Screw lag-eye bolts into each hole.

    • 3
      Quick link

Attach a quick link to each lag-eye bolt on the ceiling and to the end of each chain (eight total quick links). A quick link is a small, strong metal link which opens and closes to allow for easy, sturdy connections.

    • 4

Position two sawhorses under the ceiling lag-eye bolts. Place the day bed frame on top of the sawhorses.

    • 5

Slide each chain through the two lag-eye bolts on all four corners of the day bed. Clasp each chain to the ceiling quick links. Remove sawhorses carefully.
