Draw an outline of your living room on white paper. Mark windows and doorways around the perimeter of the room. On a separate sheet of paper, draw and color your furniture pieces using a colored pencil. Cut out each furniture piece and place them into the outline of your room as they are currently arranged.
Place your furniture pieces on your room outline so that they represent the most intuitive design for the room. When the layout adds to the comfort and function of the space, each piece of furniture will stand out because it will be available for direct use. For example, a living room with a fireplace should have seating around it. Or, if the room has a chandelier, place furniture underneath as the light fixture will naturally be the focal point of the room. Avoid grouping furniture sets in corners.
Add color and texture to your living room furniture. Once you have a layout that works well for the space, enhance your design further with color and texture. Choose your furniture color using the wall and floor colors as your guide. Light-colored objects against a dark background will appear to stand out. Conversely, dark-colored objects against a light background will stand out. Use this contrast with larger pieces of furniture so that attention is drawn to space containing the entire furniture set.
Add floor lamps over your seating areas. Lighting the areas will invite guests into the space. The combination of striking color combination, furniture layout and lighting create a stylish ambiance in your living room.
