How to Repair the Foam in an RV Armrest

RV furniture takes abuse from the inside and out. Whether it is from the sun constantly beating down on it or nervous elbows grinding into the front cab captain chairs, sooner or later your RV's armrests will need new foam. Before undertaking this task, consider using an upholstery-grade replacement fabric that compliments or matches the existing covering, and that wears well against the constant use of furniture in a small space.

Instructions

    • 1

Detach the armrest from the chair arm. These are usually attached with screws. Put the screws aside for reassembly. Remove the covering (fabric or leather) from the armrest. By the time foam replacement is needed, the covering is usually worn out and is easy to pull off. Pull out the staples and the remaining fabric.

    • 2

Salvage the existing foam if possible, in one piece, for a pattern. Remove the foam from the armrest. Lay the armrest on a piece of paper and trace around it to make a pattern. Place the pattern on a piece of upholstery foam and cut out the new pad.

    • 3

Glue the replacement foam onto the armrest. Allow the glue to dry for 30 minutes. Place the armrest foam side down onto a new piece of fabric. Ensure the back-side of the fabric is in contact with the foam. Trace around the foam to make a pattern for the fabric cut. Allow up to 3 inches extra on all sides. Check the fabric allowance on the opposing armrest to double check the excess. Cut the replacement fabric.

Spray adhesive onto the foam. Position the fabric into place to cover the entire armrest and pull tight over the sides. Staple the fabric in place.

    • 5

Replace the armrest back onto the chair and secure with screws. Allow the armrest to dry for a couple of hours before use.
