How to Cover Furniture and Decorate With Sheets

The wide width of sheets gives you a seamless fabric to work with when it comes to jazzing up furniture with a fabric face-lift. Working with sheets that are tightly woven, with a thread count between 200 and 500, means that your home makeover will last a long time, as the sheets are likely to stay in good condition. Sheets are abundantly available in many styles and colors. From solids that span all the shades of the color wheel to floral prints and abstract designs, decorating to achieve a designer look in a room can be accomplished using sheets.

Make slipcovers for your sofa and chairs. Draw the outline of the seat, sides and back of the sofa or chair onto the kraft paper with the marker. Cut them out and lay them onto the sheet as a pattern. Cut the pieces from the seat and sew the matching edges together. Fit the finished furniture cover over the sofa or chair.

Cover an ottoman with a sheet. Wrap the sheet over the padded surface of the ottoman, and cut to size if needed. Fold it under to hide its cut edges, and staple it into the ottoman frame, all the way around, to give it a tight fit.

Cover a padded sitting bench with a sheet. Remove the top of the sitting bench, and lay it facedown on the wrong side of the fabric. Center it so that there is enough overlap for the fabric to fold over its sides to the underside of the bench top. Pull the fabric taut at each corner and staple them, one at a time, into the base of the bench top. Staple the sides of the fabric as well to complete the sheet cover installation over the bench.

Make window curtains from sheets. Matching curtains made from coordinating sheets will complete the room's makeover. Measure the desired curtain length with a tape measure. Add 4 inches to the bottom measurement, and use the wide hem at the top of the sheet as a pre-made slot for the curtain rod. Sew another stitch about 1 1/2 inches down from the edge of the wide hem to make a slot for the curtain rod. The excess fabric above this stitch will ruffle once the curtain is gathered on the curtain rod. Slide the curtain rod into the curtain and hang it in place.

Sew throw pillows for a couch or chair with sheets. Cut simple squares about 15 inches each side to make throw pillows. Match two pieces together with right sides facing inward and sew a stitch along three-and-a-half of its sides. Snip off the excess fabric between the stitch and the points at the corners so that the fabric does not bunch. Turn the pillow cover inside out and stuff it with polyester stuffing. Stitch the opening closed, and dress up the room with these cushioned accessories made from sheets.
