What Kind of Hinges Should be Used for a Corner Cabinet?

Corner cabinets maximize storage in your living space. Selecting the appropriate hinges to mount doors onto your corner cabinet is a critical step in achieving an overall polished and professional end result.
  1. Types

    • Most hinges are made so that either end of the hinge can be mounted in an upright position; these are called reversible hinges. Reversible hinges allow mounting of either right- or left-hand doors as you can easily reverse the positioning of the hinge to install to the door's specifications. Left-hand hinges should be used for doors that open toward the right and right-hand hinges should be used for doors that open toward the left.

    Mounts

    • Choose the appropriate mount style for your corner cabinet. Depending on your needs you will need to choose between a surface mount and mortise mount hinge. Surface mount hinges are exposed as they are fastened to the outer surface of the door frame. Mortise mount hinges are installed in between the door's edge and frame, thus concealing the wings of the hinge.

    Styles

    • There are several different styles of hinges that could be used for corner cabinets. The loose pin butt hinge is the most common type of hinge, typically found on doors. Continuous or piano hinges are reversible general purpose hinges that can work on any size corner cabinet door. Flush hinges are surface mount cabinet hinges that once installed, conceal everything but the barrel of the hinge. Spring-loaded hinges have an internal spring mechanism that allows the door to snap close again once opened.
