Instructions

    • 1

Remove the old cushion covers from the cushion and carefully take apart each piece using your seam ripper. This will allow you to create the fabric pattern for the new cushion.

    • 2

Take your pieces and the cushion itself to a fabric store to choose your new materials. Choose the fabric that you want to use to recover the cushion, and unroll the fabric long enough that you can lay down your pattern pieces over it, leaving a 1/2-inch space between each piece. Cut the piece of new fabric and roll it up to take home. Meanwhile, have the store cut a new cushion with the exact dimensions of the old one. Use a durable foam like a memory foam to ensure the cushion will last.

    • 3

Pin the pattern pieces onto the new fabric and carefully cut your new fabric into pieces the exact sizes of the old ones. Once the pieces are cut, you can unpin the old pieces. You will use these pieces as a guide to sew the new ones.

    • 4

Sew the pieces together using your sewing machine in the same way they were sewn before. Sew the zipper side first, then attach the top and bottom pieces to that piece. You'll want to sew the material inside out, so that the seams are on the inside of the cushion. Once you've completed the sewing, pull the material through the open zipper so that the cushion cover is right side out.

Insert the foam piece into the cushion cover and adjust so that the foam sits tightly in each corner. If there are loose places, you can remove the foam and resew areas as necessary. Once the cushion is in place and you are satisfied with the fit, zip up the zipper and place the new cushion back in place on your furniture.
