How to Place a Couch & Love Seat

Getting new furniture can be fun and exciting, until you try to arrange it in your living room. It doesn't have to give you a headache, however. Before you move all your furniture around, have a plan for how you want to use and arrange your furniture. It will save you time and aching muscles from moving the couch and love seat all day.

  1. Getting Started

    • 1

Establish how you want to use the room. Is it a room to sit in and watch television? Is it more formal, used mainly to sit and have conversations? The purpose of the room will dictate, in part, how you arrange it.

    • 2

Measure your room and draw a blueprint on the graph paper. Each foot should be one square on your paper. Include any windows, doors and other design features that will affect your room design.

    • 3

Cut out scale paper models of your couch, love seat and other furniture you want to include in your room. By having them cut out, you can easily move them around the blueprint of your room.

    TV Room

    • 4

Place the scale model of your television in your room. Many TVs, especially if mounted on the wall or within an entertainment center, cannot be moved.

    • 5

Place your scale model couch and love seat on the blueprint. Although both do not have to be facing the television set, you want the people sitting on it to see it clearly. L shapes are very popular for this setup.

    • 6

Move your furniture. Put the couch facing the television, with the love seat coming off one end, in the L shape. Place an end table in the corner between the two pieces of furniture. Make sure that the furniture is not too close together; you don't want it to look crammed together.

    Sitting Room

    • 7

Place your scale model furniture on the blueprint. You have a little more freedom in this arrangement, because you are not limited to where the television set is.

    • 8

Move the pieces around until they look good. Allow the couch and love seat to be near each other, preferably facing each other. You do not want them crammed in, however. Most people do not like to sit on top of each other when having a conversation.

    • 9

Try a U shape with your shapes. Place your couch on the longest wall, placing your love seat in the L shape. Across from the love seat, place a chair or another love seat. You have created a U shape in the room with your furniture.

    • 10

Arrange the furniture shapes into parallel lines. Place the couch on the longest wall, with the love seat facing it. They do not have to both be against the walls, if the room is wide. Place about 10 feet in between the two pieces. Put a coffee table in the middle. This should allow for plenty of walking space between the pieces of furniture.

    • 11

Move your furniture in your home. You might find that one arrangement works better than another; go with it.
