How to Keep Furniture From Sliding on Hardwood Floors

Hardwood floors are an attractive addition to almost any room, and large pieces of furniture are common in just about every home. Put the two together, though, and you often have a furniture skating rink in your home. Even if you are careful not to lean or push on your couches or tables, children and dogs have a bad habit of jumping and bumping into everything. Some people buy commercial furniture pads that help create friction and keep your sofa in place, but you can make the same thing at home for a fraction of the price.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase a package of sticky bathroom decals. These stickers are meant for the inside of bathtubs and shower stalls. They have a waterproof adhesive on one side and a textured coating on the other. They often come in flower and fish shapes, but the shape and color don't matter in this project.

Turn your furniture over onto its side to expose all four feet. Hold a sticker up to one furniture foot, and estimate the size of the bottom of the foot. Cut off a piece of sticker from the main sticker body that approximates the size of the bottom of your furniture foot. Cut a little larger than you think you need to allow for extra trimming.

    • 3

Peel the paper backing from the cut piece of sticker. Affix the sticker piece to the bottom of your furniture leg. Push on the bottom of the leg surface to make sure the adhesive is stuck completely onto the wood.

    • 4

Trim around the bottom of your furniture leg to remove any pieces of sticker that may stick out on the sides. You will be left with a furniture leg with the bottom completely covered with sticker, but with no overhanging sticker material.

Repeat this method with the other three legs of your furniture, then return it to its upright position.
