How to Assemble Upholstered Furniture

Furniture that is packed in pieces to be put together by the buyer is known as ready-to-assemble. Purchasing upholstered furniture in ready-to-assemble form can be a cost-effective alternative to buying an assembled piece. Assembling this type of furniture is akin to a jigsaw puzzle -- the pieces need to fit together in a specific way. Taking care to follow assembly instructions and use the right tools will ensure you can begin enjoying your upholstered furniture as quickly as possible.

Instructions

    • 1

Clear your work area of any dirt or debris. Vacuum if necessary. Place cardboard on your work surface to protect the floor. (You may be able to collapse the furniture's shipping box for this.)

    • 2

Organize the individual pieces of furniture, laying them out in the order in which they will be used. This includes the upholstered pieces and any bolts or screws required for assembly. Compare the parts list to your pieces to verify that you have all of the pieces. Make sure you have the tools you will need, such as a screwdriver.

    • 3

Refer to the assembly diagram. Place the first two pieces together and secure them with a bolt or screw. Insert all other screws and bolts for each step; then go back and tighten each screw. Make sure screws are secure, but don't overtighten, as that can damage the piece.

Follow subsequent steps in order. If you are missing any pieces, contact the furniture manufacturer or the store where you purchased the item. You may be able to get the piece you need without replacing the whole piece of furniture.
