Fabrics to Upholster a Sofa

Chenille

• Chenille is a common choice to upholster a sofa thanks to its strength and durability. This kind of fabric is woven together of many different fibers and typically comes in a solid color with coordinating colors woven into the fabric. It is generally rip and hair resistant and, if treated with a stain guard, will be relatively easy to keep clean. For homes with pets, children and high traffic, this fabric is a durable and inexpensive option.

Vinyl/Leather

• Often chosen for its upscale appeal and overall look, leather is a favorite fabric for sofas. When it comes to durability, however, leather is often not well suited for homes with pets or children. It can easily tear or become punctured from nails. However, in homes where these issues are not present, leather becomes more practical. Those who want the look of leather but prefer an easier-to-care-for material that is less expensive often choose vinyl or synthetic leather such as Naugahyde.

Cotton Duck

• Cotton duck is a very heavy cotton fabric that is sometimes used as an upholstery fabric. This is not a very good choice for homes with pets since the cotton can attract hair, and cleaning this material can be difficult. However, if the cotton duck is treated with a stain guard and is not in a high-use area, it can be a very good choice for upholstery. Sofas made with this fabric are typically much less expensive.

Wool and Other Fabrics

• Although it is not common, wool is sometimes used as a fabric to upholster a sofa. The main concerns with this fabric are stain resistance, hair collection in homes with pets and the fact that this fabric is not very easy to clean. Other choices for sofa upholstery fabric include acrylic blends that are typically very stain resistant, as well as acetate. These fabrics are generally not very soft, but they are durable and fairly easy to keep clean.
