How to Prevent Scratching the Floor From Chairs

If you've ever pushed back your chair after dinner and scratched your beautiful hardwood floor, you probably understand that feeling of frustration. Any hard-surface floor can be damaged by furniture unless you take precautions. Whether hardwood, laminate, ceramic tile, acrylic or any other type, you need to pad the feet of chairs and other furniture before sliding them across the floor.

Instructions

Measure the bottom of the feet on each chair or other piece of furniture you need to pad, or, in the case of a heavy item you can't lift, make a guess. This will help you determine the size and shape of the padding, cups or glides you will make or buy.

Apply purchased sticky-backed felt pads, plastic glides, or plastic cups designed and sized for furniture. To apply the pads, turn the chair or other piece of furniture on its side. Clean the bottom of the feet, and allow to dry. Once dry, stick one pad on the bottom of each foot. To use the glides or cups, lift a corner and slide one under the exposed foot, and repeat at the other corners.

Make your own pads from an old sweatshirt, blanket or towel. Measure and cut out appropriately sized pieces of material. Apply glue to the clean and dry bottom of the feet on each piece of furniture, one at a time. Apply the padding, and allow the glue to dry before turning the chair or other piece right side up.
