How to Get the Back Off a Recliner

It may be necessary to remove the back of a recliner when you are moving it, simply because a recliner fits into vehicles better and is easier to handle with the back removed. Removing the back of a recliner requires some inspection to determine how the back is secured. Most backs are secured to the recliner with a screw on each side. Others have tabs that fasten the back to the body of the chair. In either case, all that is needed are a common household tools.

Pull up the fabric tabs on the bottom of the recliner toward the back. Recliner upholstery is usually secured with Velcro to make it easy to access the area where the back is secured.

Inspect the back and determine if the back is secured with screws or with tabs.

Unscrew the screws on either side of the bottom of the back if it secured in this manner. Use a standard screwdriver and turn the screws counterclockwise. If the back is secured with tabs, insert the blade of a standard screwdriver under the tabs and pry them toward you.

Grasp the back of the recliner with one hand on either side and pull it straight up and off the main body of the chair.
