How to Remove the Smell of Moth Balls From Oversized Funiture

Mothballs are small balls of pesticide often used to keep moth larvae from chewing holes through clothing. Mothballs are highly effective, but often leave behind a strong odor that can be nauseating. Clothing and other fabrics can be easily washed to remove the smell, but removing the odor from furniture is more challenging since furniture obviously won't fit into a washing machine. Fortunately, there are several steps that can be taken to remove the smell from even the largest furniture.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Place the furniture outside to air out, if possible. Open a window or point a box fan toward the furniture to help create air circulation if it is too large or inconvenient to move.

    • 2

Spray your furniture with a pet-odor eliminator, such as "OUT!" or "PureAyre." These products work by absorbing bad smells to help neutralize the air.

    • 3

Dampen a cloth with vinegar and wipe down any furniture that smells of mothballs. This works best on wooden furniture, such as tables and chairs, but can also be done on cloth furniture.

    • 4

Sprinkle cloth furniture with baking soda. Allow the baking soda to sit undisturbed for 12 to 24 hours, then vacuum it.
