Use the same graph paper to create blocks of various sizes to represent furniture. You can get as detailed as you want with the design process, or you can choose to only plan where the large pieces will go.

Have a Focus

• A living room design always has a central focus. It could be the television with the entertainment center, it could be the fireplace or it could even be the large bay window at the front of the room. The focus of the living room is up to you, but choosing a focus will help the rest of your room rearranging project fall into place.

• Your living room is one of the busier rooms in the house. It is where the family congregates during bad weather, it can be the center of family entertainment with the stereo and television, it may be the game room that hosts all the video game systems, or it can be the place the parents go to relax. But there is usually a significant amount of traffic that goes through a living room. You need to plan your rearranging project around the traffic patterns of your living room. Arranging the furniture to account for high traffic areas will reduce the chance of injury and property damage.

Start Big

• The easiest way to get your furniture arranged in your living room like you want is to place the largest pieces of furniture in the living room first. When you are planning your new living room arrangement, you try to account for the scale of your largest pieces of furniture. But when the furniture is actually in the room, that scale could change. Put the largest pieces in place first, and then arrange the rest of the furniture around them.
