Parts of a Recliner

A recliner is a piece of furniture, first designed in 1833, the back of which can be lowered. Additionally a leg rest can be brought up, normally in one lever-activated motion. The recliner gets its name from this reclining action. It is most often considered a piece of lounging furniture and is known by the term "the man's chair." In recent years the recliner has changed, becoming more accepted in all types of homes, not just the bachelor's pad.
  1. Chair

    • The most obvious part of the recliner is the chair itself. When not in the reclined position, the recliner appears to be the same as any other arm chair. Usually the recliner is stuffed with lots of padding to provide comfort. Common materials for the recliner include cloth, microfiber and leather. More often then not the frame of the recliner is built out of wood and springs are used to provide support to the body.

    Backrest

    • The backrest of the recliner is where the user would place his back when sitting. The backrest is also what defines the recliner. This is because the backrest is what does the reclining in the recliner. In some recliners there can be a series of positions, these position will be defined by the backrest, which can lay at any number of angles, including laying completely flat.

    Footrest

    • The recliner's footrest is not immediately visible. When the recliner is placed in the reclined position, the footrest appears from the base of the recliner. The footrest can be made with one, two or three cushions. A recliner's footrest is not made to support more than the weight of one's legs. This is because it is typical to apply pressure to the footrest in order to return the recliner from its reclined position to the standard chair position.

    Additions

    • Some recliners come with additions to increase the appeal of the recliner to a potential buyer. Some may come with cup holders and storage spaces in the arm rests. Other recliners come with cloth storage pockets, which can hold magazines and television remote controls. There are even sectional recliners which can be linked together with others. More modern additions include motorized recliners, internal heaters and even back massagers. All of these, of course, can increase the price by many hundreds of dollars.
