Types of Large Couches

When furnishing a room, seating is a primary concern. Your lifestyle and the size of your living room will dictate the type, style and scale of couch that you choose. A family that has large gatherings or entertains frequently needs a large couch. Large couches can also double as extra sleeping space for overnight visitors.
  1. Sectionals

    • An upholstered ottoman can be used for additional seating.

Sectional couches, sometimes called modular sofas, come with three or more pieces that connect together. The beauty of the sectional is that it can be expanded to meet any family's seating needs. Sectionals can be custom ordered, and available pieces include a corner section, end section with arm, bench or ottoman, chaise section, recliner and straight armless section.

    Theater Couch

    • Home theater couches are sold in sections with each section having a console or arm rest. The console section between seats is large enough to hold drinks or a snack for munching during a movie. Theater sofas come with segments that can be arranged in curves or straight rows. You may also purchase theater sofas which have reclining sections.

    Extra Long Couch

    • A typical three-seat sofa is approximately 76 inches long at the outside dimensions. A 6-foot man could not comfortably stretch out on a 76-inch sofa. To get a longer couch, look for a four- or five-seat couch. Purchasing a sofa with an arm at only one end will give you the option of adding an ottoman bench at the opposite end for additional seating.

    Extra Deep Couch

    • The elderly may have trouble rising from a deep couch.

A typical seat on a couch is approximately 25 inches to the back cushion. Many contemporary couches are made extra deep -- as deep as 30 to 40 inches. Extra deep couches, if they are long enough, can be used as a bed if they have removable back cushions. One thing to keep in mind is that short people are often uncomfortable sitting on deep couches, so be sure to provide extra pillows that can be used for back support.
