How to Repair Durahide

Durahide is a synthetic material that has the look and feel of leather. It is used for sofas and other furniture pieces as a more affordable alternative to authentic leather. Although Durahide is considerably less expensive than leather, it does not stand up to daily use as leather does and and may need repairs within a few years. The good news is that Durahide is easily repaired using a commercially available leather repair kit.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the damaged Durahide with a cloth and liquid dishwashing detergent. Remove all grease, dirt and debris, rinse with water and dry thoroughly with a towel.

    • 2

Apply the prep solution contained in a leather repair kit or wipe the area with rubbing alcohol. Let it air dry.

    • 3

Stir the repair compound with the disposable spreading tool contained in the kit. Using the spreading tool, spread the compound onto the damaged areas evenly. Overlap about 1/2 inch into the surrounding area with the compound. Leave the compound for 30 minutes or until completely dry.

    • 4

Sand the dried compound lightly to smooth the surface. Wipe with rubbing alcohol and let dry. Reapply the compound in the same manner two to five more times or until the area is completely filled, letting each layer dry between applications. Let the compound dry completely.
