Which Types of Rugs Best Trap Heavy Dirt?

Heavy traffic rooms require carpets and rugs that trap serious dirt. Interior areas in homes like family rooms, stairways and hallways have heavy traffic and need carpet weaves and material that catch dirt and do not require frequent cleaning. Offices and commercial establishments also require carpeting that can withstand heavy traffic and the capacity to trap a great quantity of dirt.
  1. CPR

    • The Carpet Performance Rating number from 1 to 5 found on the label of the carpet or the rug represents the suitability of the carpet for wear and tear. The Carpet Design Institute rates carpets to inform customers of their quality and durability. Carpets that have a rating of 4 to 5 offer greater resistance to heavy dirt and heavy traffic. They make ideal carpets for areas frequented by children and pets.

    Cut Pile

    • Cut pile carpets have cut loops that minimize footprints and can withstand heavy traffic areas with heavy piling of dirt. The three varieties of cut pile rugs that can trap heavy dirt include Plush Velvet that has a smooth level surface, Saxony that has a twisted finish and visible yarn ends and Freize that have twisted and curled ends. All these weaves have stain-hiding capabilities.

    Loop Pile

    • Loop pile rugs have uncut loops. The two varieties that effectively withstand heavy dirt include the level loop rugs with loops of the same height. The level loop pile found in the popular Berber rugs has loops of the same height. The multi-loop pile has loops of different heights with the same durability of level loop piles. The claws of pets may get caught in the loops of loop pile rugs. Loop pile rugs have stain-hiding capabilities and make good rugs for high-traffic areas in offices or homes that do not have pets.

    Cut and Loop Pile

    • This rug has a combination of cut and loop yarns to provide a durable surface and an attractive sculptured design. This type of rug also has soil-hiding capabilities.

    Material

    • The fiber of the rug should withstand heavy dirt for use in heavy traffic areas. Rug fibers that trap the dirt from pets and children include nylon. Nylon fiber is easy to clean and maintain and does not tear if heavy furniture moves over the rug. Olefin (Polypropylene) not only traps dirt in heavy areas but resists mold and mildew. Velvet and level loop rugs in acrylic make a good dirt and mildew-resistant alternative to wool rugs in heavy traffic rooms. Polyester is moisture proof, stain proof and makes ideal carpets in heavy traffic rooms and office areas. Polyester has a soft plush velvet appearance for a deep cut pile rug. Blends of wool and nylon or acrylic and olefin also make good rugs that effectively trap dirt in high traffic areas in homes and offices.
