How to Remove Burns From Upholstery

Accidents occur on a regular basis. When your couch, love seat or chair incurs a burn mark from a candle, cigarette or other ignited source, the marks left behind are unsightly. Rather than spread a throw blanket over your furniture, you can patch over the burn marks, effectively removing them from the upholstery. This is not a difficult repair and only takes minutes to complete. You will only need a few upholstery-repair items to conceal those burn marks for good.

Things You'll Need

  • Upholstery cleaner
  • Cloth
  • Vinyl patch (upholstery patch)
  • Scissors
  • Vinyl adhesive
  • Hand roller

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the throw pillows and blanket as well as any other loose items from the upholstery furniture.

    • 2

Clean on and around the burn mark with an upholstery cleaner, then wipe down with a clean cloth and allow to air-dry.

    • 3

Hold a vinyl patch the same color as the furniture over the burn mark to measure its size. Cut the patch with scissors to both cover the burn and to overlap the burn by 1 to 2 inches.

    • 4

Push into the burn mark with your finger, folding the edges down into the furniture so the edges do not protrude out or stand upward.

    • 5

Squeeze vinyl adhesive onto the back of the patch as well as around the burn mark. Immediately fit the vinyl patch over the burn mark and press down, then rub from the center of the patch out to the edges with the palms of your hands.

    • 6

Flatten the patch into place with a hand roller and allow the vinyl adhesive to dry. Loosely cover with a cloth to block out sunlight. Allow to dry for 24 hours before using the upholstered furniture.
