Choose a sectional size and shape that complements the space you are designing. Use a larger sectional if you intend to place it against a long wall, or to frame a large section of your room. Use a smaller sectional if you intend to place it away from your wall. Make sure the color scheme of your sectional sofa complements your overall design vision, making your sofa a center piece for your plan.
Review the location of important elements in your space. Identify the areas where people will enter your area, such as from an adjoining room, doorway in your living room, or hallway leading off from your living room. Identify the location of electrical outlets in your space. Remember that you can cover floor plugs in your space with a sectional; you can also use your sectional to hide cords, cables or other devices in your area. For instance, if you review your space and find that your electrical plugs are all wall mounted, you can either select a sectional sofa to place against your wall in the room or rewire the space to provide floor plugs elsewhere in the area.
Position your sectional sofa to give access to your living room from all of your primary entry positions. If you are placing your sectional against a wall, make sure to place it so that you are not blocking any entry ways. Walk through your space to get an idea of how difficult it is to enter and maneuver in your room. Remember that you can rearrange the sections in your sectional sofa to change the size and shape of your piece, making space for people to move through your space.
Place coffee tables, area rugs and lights to anchor your sectional sofa in position. Place an area rug in front of your sectional, or slightly under your sofa if your area rug is large enough, to create a living room space that incorporates your sofa with your other furniture. If you place your sectional against a wall, place end tables to the side of your sofa. If your sectional is away from the wall, place a table behind it; place lamps on the table to provide lighting for those sitting on your sofa.
